A Young Girl's Diary
Marion Louise Tyler
Exeter, New Hampshire
1910, age 15-16

January 1 - Ruth and I went to call on Mrs. Lawrence in evening. Home at 8:20. Clarence came from Lawrence at 7:30. I have made no resolutions this year except to be a little neater in keeping this diary than I did last year.

January 4 - In evening all of us were here and we had the best time we have had for a long time. Papa and Ralph said the Japanese prayer and we laughed and laughed all the evening. We tried to hypnotize Mildred but didn't succeed. We also tried to lift Ralph from the floor but couldn't because we laughed so much. We certainly had a corking old time. We nearly died laughing.

January 5 - Clarence went back to college at 5.

January 6 - Rained a little all day. In p.m. made a crepe shirt waist for Ruth.

January 7 - Still raining. At 7 p.m. R and I went down town. Went in telephone office to see Glen L. Made myself a black fur turban hat in p.m.

January 8 (Saturday) - Made Ruth a tailored shirt waist in a.m. In p.m. went to S's to see R and Lucy. Home at 5:45. Read and sewed in evening. The river froze from so much rain, but it isn't any good skating. It is good coasting on the crust though.

January 9 - To church and SS. In p.m. B.J., R and I went to 4 o'clock meeting and at 6 to B.J.'s church. Afterwards we went in to see the Methodist Church and looked around to see it since it has been made over. Home at 7:20. Helped Ruth on Algebra problems, studied a little myself and sewed. Nice day.

January 10 - At 7:30 went to F's. Ruth came in at 10, but got mad and went home. I got home at 11:20.

January 11 - At noon Ruth and I went down town. I took my skates down to get them sharpened. We were nearly late for school. In evening R and I went to Ralph's room with him. Then down town and home at 7:45. Studied and took a bath and to bed at 10:30.

January 12 - Mama went to Mrs. James' in a.m. and stayed till 8. At 4 B.J. and Miss Littlefield and I went skating. B.J. and some other girls had to stay after school and when I told Miss L. that it was good skating she let them go.

January 13 - At noon Ruth, Miss L. and I went skating. Felt bum all day. My eyes ached and also my head. I've got a cold too. After school B.J. and a lot of others and I went skating. Had packs of fun. We made four boys pull a whole line of us girls. It was great fun.

January 14 - At 7 went to B.J.'s after doing an errand for Mama. We went to Lib and met Ruth, and then we all went to B.J.'s prayer meeting. We were going to our own but no one was there so we went to the first Ch. Home at 9. Had some fun. B.J. and I took several dumps, but R didn't. Stormy evening. To bed at 11:30.

January 17 - Miss Littlefield got after me today several times. She got angry because I answered her back so she told me to sit in the Freshman section all day. I sat there for one period in a.m. and one in p.m. Then she was so mad at me that she said I could sit there all the time. I skipped out at 4 and I won't change my books unless I have to. Took music lesson at 5:15 and at 7:45 to F's. Home at 10:20 and then Ruth, Mama and I had a lunch. To bed at 11:30.

January 18 - Rained a little all day. Had one session. I guess Miss Littlefield has given me up as a hopeless case. R and I went to lecture by Dr. Otis on "The White Plague" which was very good. Mama and Papa went too. Felt like the deuce all day. Have a cold and headache and a funny feeling in roof of my mouth.

January 19 - Rather bad walking. Miss Jacques called B.J. and me into her room at 4 and talked to us. She said she had come to the conclusion that we couldn't be depended upon. She asked us a lot of questions and we didn't answer one. She got daffy and she didn't know what to do with us. So after sitting there like dummies she let us go. We've got to go in her room tomorrow night and tell her what we think we have done to make her think we are not to be depended upon. We nearly busted laughing. Then we went down town.

January 20 - Biddy Jacques talked to us again in p.m. recess. She said I wasn't courteous and so afterwards I apologized. I hope she's satisfied now. Bad walking.

January 21 - At noon sent suitcase to Clarence. R and I walked to school with Miss Littlefield. Got to talking about white rhinoceroses being very rare. We nearly died laughing. Mr. Bisbee and I played in chapel for the girls to dance. The sidewalks are all water. The sleighing isn't much good.

January 22 (Saturday) - At 7:45 walked up to R.S. entrance with Ruth, and then to B.J.'s. There was a subscription dance at the Seminary tonight given by the seniors. I came home and sat up for R. She came at 11:45 after having a good time.

Ruth went to Dunbar dance. Rained all day. Home from S's at 10. Just before I went to bed the moon and stars came out. Sent Mr. Brinkler a postal. I can't take any more music lessons because I have so much to do. It is too hard work practicing and studying and working altogether so I guess I'll quit taking music lessons.

February 1 - At 7:30 B.M. [probably B. McNulty] and I went to concert given by the Xonian (#38) orchestra which was very good. A dance followed. I stayed a little while but came home at 10. Called in S's. Ruth is going to stay up there all night. Rec'd letter from Clarence today.
