January 1 - Two weeks ago today we got the new piano. Mama went to Mrs. James to spend the day. [Evelyn was twelve years old today.]

January 2 - After cleaning up the sitting room and eating my dinner, I went up to B. Johnson's house. She wasn't at home so I took a walk down town and then to Stevenson's (#5). Ruth wasn't in but I waited for her and talked with Fannie Kennedy. In evening I went down town with Ruth. She walked so slow I thought I would die. Papa went to Carney to see about his foot last Wednesday. They didn't understand it so he came home. It's about the same now, I think.

January 3 - At 3 I went to communion and joined the church (#6). There were 5 besides me. I was the only one who didn't have to be baptized. Went to meeting at 4, and then to Mrs. George Richards to get a bundle for Ruth. At 7 I went to Mr. Helm's to stay with Virginia and most went to sleep there. Ruth came to call for me, she had been at Mrs. Fiske's. It began to rain when we came home. Reached home at 11 o'clock. After eating something (as I always do) I went to bed at 11:30. Dr. Day came to see about Papa's foot; said he must walk on it.

January 5 - Went to Stevenson's at 4. Home at 6. Ruth and I went down town at 7:30. Home at 8:30. While down there tried to make the chinaman do up a collar for 2¢, but he wouldn't. Papa's foot much better. Rec'd a letter from Louis Lancaster, and Papa got one from Lillie. There is a possibility of the Lancasters moving to Schenectady. We do not know the outcome yet.

January 6 - To Stevenson's after school. Went down town for Mrs. S. to get her dress. Had to wait for it till 6:30. Fanny K. had supper already for me when I got back. While I was eating, Ruth came in, and I went down town with her. Papa's foot improving.

January 7 - Went to the Stevenson's at 4, but as no one was there Ruth and I went skating, and who should I meet but Mr. Gillis. Had a great old time. He came home with me. As we came by our bridge Ruth came along and interrupted our peacefulness. Home at 6 and after supper I tried to beat some Algebra into Ruth's head, but for all my pains she doesn't know any more than she did at first. We got to laughing so much that Mama said we couldn't receive company. This is a terrible cut (?), but she'll probably let us. To bed at 10 after marking Ruth's face all over and daubing her eye and arm with ink. [I don't know why I put that question mark there.]

January 8 - Stevenson's at 4:10. Home at 7:30 and then down to the church and waited for Ruth to get out of prayer meeting. Home at 9:30. Papa's foot about the same.

January 9 - Ruth and I went down town in evening. Dr. Ball came this p.m. to see Papa and Mama. Papa's foot looking pretty good.

January 10 (Sunday) - After dinner Ruth and I went up to see Auntie Getchell. She's not feeling very well. Stevenson's at 5. Home at 11:15. Papa's foot looking better. I made believe study tonight, but didn't accomplish anything.

January 11 - Papa has to go to Carney hospital in Boston as soon as he can get a bed.

January 12 - After supper Ruth and I went down town to the P.O. Then she went to Stevenson's and I came home. Papa is going to Carney the first train tomorrow about his foot. He feels perfectly well otherwise, but thinks his little toe on right foot will have to come off.

January 13 - Papa went to Boston on 6:23 train. B. Johnson and I raised time the third period this morning. At noon I saw Mr. Stokell and told him to report the case of Papa's sickness to the Odd Fellow's tomorrow night. Miss Littlefield came today from abroad. As usual went to Stevenson's at 4. Home at 6.

January 14 - They put Latin in 5 times a week now. It can't be helped. We heard from Papa. He's in doubt whether to stay out in Roxbury with Alma (#7)a while and then see Dr. Painter or to come home. He has already seen Dr. P. once, and he said to go on treating his foot as he had been doing – putting hot bandages on.

January 15 - Felt so sick to my stomach that I left Latin recitation and came home. After groaning for a while I went back to school. At noon I went down town with Ruth, and then to school. After school down town again with Ruth and then to Stevenson's. Home at 6. Ruth went to the Helm's to help Hilda Cotton serve. They had company to supper or dinner as they call it. At 7:15 went up there. Supper wasn't half over. Went to the library for an hour and then back to the Helm's. Got Ruth and Hilda and then down town. Raised cain and had lots of fun. Home at 9:45 and to bed at 10:15.

January 16 - Papa is still at Alma's. He's going to see Dr. Painter Monday. When I came home from Stevenson's had some fun with Ruth and Boyd. They were more than angry with me. To bed at 10. Mrs. Getchell died last night. We were very sorry. I'm glad that Ruth and I went to call on her last Sunday.

January 17 (Sunday) - Hilda Cotton came down to see us, and we had some fun. Ralph had two fellows down and he gave us some ice cream. Mama said we made too much noise; playing the piano etc. We had a dandy time. Stephenson's at 7. Hilda telephoned me, also Ruth from the Helm's.

January 20 - Papa's foot looking well.

January 21 - Papa's foot better.

January 22 - Papa went to Newton today, but I think he ought to have stayed at home. His foot is much better.

January 23 (Saturday) - Fiske's at 9, and home at 10 and played the piano. Stevenson's at 2. Home at 6 and after supper down town with Ruth and Hilda Cotton. When we came home Ruth and I went to see the Kriger's new piano. Papa came home at 8:30. His foot looking better.

Out at 3:45 and then took a walk down town and back to Vesper services at 4. Home at 5. I went to Mr. Stevenson's at 7 for the last time, I hope. Home at 10:45. January 25 - Up at 7:30. Fiske's at 8; school at 9. Ruth and I took our dinner. Got some puffs at Button's. At 12:40 walked home with B. McNulty on Front St. Then back to school and got Ruth and we took a walk down town and then back. Last period in p.m. we didn't have any teacher in the Main room. We girls raised cane. Papa's foot better.

January 26 - Ruth came home at 6 and said that Mr. Helm wanted me at 7. We went down town at 6:40 and then I went to Mr. Helm's and R. to Stevenson's. Telephoned Ruth and soon she came over and Pearson talked to us for a long time. Papa's foot looking first rate. Today I dared Ruth to wear one black shoe and one brown one to school. I agreed to give her a dollar if she would. Strange to say, she did, and I got my dollars worth all right. The girls roared at her.

January 29 - At 3:20 Ruth and I went down town. Met Hilda and came home with her.

February 10 - Last night's snow turned into rain. The walking is awful, and the rain comes down in torrents. I'm glad we didn't have any school. Cleaned up my room which needed it badly. In spite of the rain, Mildred carried Ruth and I up to Mrs. Somes and Ruth tried on her dress. Then down town and R had her face taken. I tried to make her laugh, but she wouldn't. Mildred carried Ruth's hat home in the sleigh on account of rain, and she and I walked. The wind blew my umbrella inside out. Papa and Mama went to the U.R.K.P. (#10) Fair again tonight. I'm glad they did, for they certainly need some recreation. At 7 I went to S's (#11) to see Ruth and then down town. Met Boyd, and he came home with me. Home at 8. February 18 - At 7 I went to see Ruth at the S's. Carried her hat and muff up to her, also her coat. I wore the hat and coat, and when I got there we exchanged our wraps. Then to the P.O. and Library. Home at 9 after calling at S's for a bundle of papers.
